So, I’m walking the length of the UK taking photographs of the people I meet. Why? Well, I wanted to do something that would enable me to raise awareness of mental health issues; I wanted to get fitter and lose some weight; I hope to raise money for two very deserving charities; the whole process creates a focus that helps me deal with my own mental health issues; and, as a documentary photographer I remain fascinated by people and creating images of them. I don’t expect to answer ‘What is Britishness?’ but I do hope to shed a little light on the often complex and diverse people that populate the UK. At a time when political and social focus has hijacked the concept of who is British and what that can mean I expect to refocus, placing the individual front and centre allowing them to illustrate a contemporary and frankly more honest Portrait of Britain.
